Compared to the most Mason books this one did not have much court room drama. To the contemporary reader, Vandover and the Brute seems tepid by comparison, and the various means Norris employs to avoid the outright discussion of vice act as obstacles to the reader's engagement in the story. And can you imagine him falling for a ditzy blonde woman who is almost the complete opposite. Catherine Fowler traces a clear trajectory of developing themes and preoccupations and shows how Potter uses song, dance, performance, and poetry to expand our experience of cinema beyond the audiovisual.
